Two very,berry great days!
posted by
Our family was able to go and pick blueberries at a farm called Muskrat Haven. Mommy gave us some wise instructions before picking. We were told to only pick the big blue ones and
make sure they weren’t hard. It was amazing to find out that there were big ones in very peculiar places. First we found out that the big ones were under the leaves where the birds don’t look. Second we found that the big ones were closer to the back of the orchard. I was grateful for Mommy’s wise instructions, because the big ripe ones always taste better
.
Just a few days ago we went to the Hynes house and picked thornless blackberries. The Hynes family has worked
together to create an amazing garden in their own backyard. Earlier this year they sold blackberry plants to the
public. Last weekend they let us be their first pick-your-own customers. It is really neat to see a family working together to begin a home business. Picking thornless blackberries was a
lot like picking blueberries & wild blackberries except these were much bigger. In about 25 minutes we picked almost 10 pounds! We look
forward to making blackberry cobbler and jelly. If you are in the area, stop by and try some.

Those sure were berry great days (excellent title
). Puckering from sour berries (ooh), jumping away from big, scary beetles (yikes), getting as close to the strange Guinea hens, enjoying the scenery, and laughing a lot sure made for a couple of good memories.
I did learn one thing new from Mr. Hynes. Remember that he said a way to determine a ripe blackberry is one that has lost its shininess? Reminds me of the need for Christians to willingly give up the shiny facades of the world in exchange for a sweet relationship with Jesus.
Thornless blackberries sound like a very, berry, good idea.
Listening to the advice of those wiser than us is a good way to avoid the pricks of undesired consequences too!
Yum! I sure would think it’d be quite a bit nicer picking from thornless plants than what we’re used to. It seems there is someone always exclaiming “ouch!”
from some corner of the berry patch. They sound like a good idea to me (or maybe I should say, FEEL like a good idea!)
Guess what Daniel! After moderating your comment, I realized you are to receive the lofty entitlement of, “Poster of the 300th comment!”
Congratulations, and thank you to you and your family for the many contributions to our blog!
Those blueberries look so good. And those are extremely big Blackberries. They must have been really good in a pie, or even plain!
Thank you for sharing. How refreshing it is to check up on our Wilkes Team friends and see our Hynes friends there too! We sure do miss both of you very much! When are you coming ot Texas?
Have a blessed day!
Sounds like a lot of fun…I can remember many times that our family has picked blueberries together. WE all love blueberries. =) God bless.
